My Kuala Lumpur to Colombo Flight Experience
A Journey
Have you ever had the feeling of going home? I can’t truly describe how it is, but it is one of the best feelings in the world. This time, it was not only a flight experience, but an experience of a feeling I had never felt before.
I booked SriLankan Airlines for this trip because I wanted to feel that homely feeling from the very beginning. My flight was SriLankan Airlines UL315 from Kuala Lumpur to Colombo. It was a 3-hour and 25-minute flight. The total cost of the flight was 546.33 MYR, including a meal and a 37 kg baggage allowance.
As I packed my bags and headed to the airport, I felt a mix of gratitude, nostalgia, and excitement. Even for a short period of time, going home is the dream of everyone living abroad. As always, I arranged all my baggage and important documents one day before the flight. It helps me reduce stress and ensures a smooth flying experience. And as always, I managed to reach the airport at least three hours before the flight.
Leaving Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur International Airport felt unusually calm that day. Maybe it was just me moving slower, observing more. Every announcement and every boarding call reminded me that this journey was different. I wasn’t flying to explore, but I was flying to belong.
I arrived at KLIA Terminal 1. I wanted to get a printout, and thankfully there was a print shop available. Here is the link. Thank me later! https://share.google/tXdU6zkfnmEkYgf54
Before boarding, I took a moment to look around and spent some time with my husband, because I knew I would miss him in the coming weeks. Finally, time was up, and I had to leave it all behind. With my boarding pass in hand, I was ready for the next chapter.
A First Ride
This was a brand-new experience for me. In fact, this flight gave me many new experiences, because it was the first time I was at KLIA Terminal 1. All previous times, I had travelled through KLIA Terminal 2.
Before reaching my gate, I experienced something completely new, an internal train ride inside the airport. It was my first time using an airport train to get to the gate, and honestly, it felt exciting in the simplest way.
As the train moved smoothly through the terminal, I looked around with quiet curiosity. Everything felt efficient, calm, and well organized. In that short ride, I felt like a child experiencing something for the first time. I'm observing, smiling, and silently appreciating how travel keeps surprising us in small ways.
It wasn’t just a ride to the gate. It was another little memory added to this journey home.
Boarding Moments
Boarding was smooth and well organized. As I stepped into the aircraft, the warm welcome from the crew instantly made me feel comfortable. There’s a familiar feeling when flying this airline on this route almost like the journey has already started before takeoff.
Settling into my seat, I watched the passengers around me, all carrying their own stories. Some were heading home like me, while others were beginning new adventures. Soon, the doors closed, and the aircraft slowly moved toward the runway. As always, the captain did their job perfectly. The takeoff was smooth. This is another reason I love SriLankan Airlines, they always provide the best flying experience.
Above the Clouds
As the plane took off, Kuala Lumpur faded beneath the clouds. The city lights disappeared, and a calm silence filled the cabin. I took a moment to be grateful for everything. The flight was around three and a half hours, but time felt slower in a good way.
I always love having a window seat. Watching the clouds float endlessly below makes me feel peaceful. Up there, everything feels lighter, even thoughts. But this time, I missed it. Okay, I’ll give you a tip.
When I book flights, I usually use googleflights.com, and I never book seats at the time of booking. What I do instead is early check-in. I always manage to be among the first few people at the counter and gently ask for a window seat. That way, you can save money.
It works almost all the time. But this day, I was a little late because I was exploring the airport. As a result, I missed the window seat because they were all booked. But it was okay I got a seat near the door with huge leg space.
Comfort in the Sky
Flying with SriLankan Airlines always feels special to me. I took my first flight at the age of 30. Until then, I had dreamed of taking my first flight with SriLankan Airlines. And yes my first flight was with SriLankan Airlines, from Colombo to New Delhi.
This makes it even more special when it comes to in-flight service. There’s a comforting familiarity in the way everything is done. It’s simple, warm, and thoughtful.
And of course, my favorite part is the food and drinks.
Is anyone else obsessed with the apple juice served on flights? No matter the airline, this juice tastes better in the air. I don’t know if there is a scientific reason behind it, but I only know one thing the apple juice on flights always tastes heavenly.
So I always choose apple juice when I’m flying. It tastes incredibly refreshing in the air, much better than on the ground. It has become a little personal ritual for me, and this flight was no different.
Each sip felt comforting, like a small reminder that I was getting closer to home. But inside, I kept thinking I need more apple juice! Haha!
I chose the fish option for my meal and received Chinese-style fish noodles. I was grateful for that because I miss Southeast Asian food when I’m in Sri Lanka. I already have a list of authentic Sri Lankan dishes waiting for me there, so this felt like a perfect last taste before leaving it behind. I also had a chickpea salad, which was refreshing, and for dessert, a yogurt pudding. No doubt I love anything mixed with yogurt.
Finally, the unique Sri Lankan touch. Ceylon tea to close the meal. A warm welcome to the country that produces the world’s best tea.
Quiet Reflections
Somewhere between Kuala Lumpur and Colombo, I found myself lost in thought. The gentle hum of the aircraft, the soft cabin lights, and the stillness of the night created the perfect space to reflect.
I thought about the experiences I had, the lessons I learned, and the people I met. Traveling teaches us many things, but returning home teaches us gratitude.
Touching Down
As the plane began its descent, I looked out of the window and saw the familiar landscape of Sri Lanka green fields, warm lights, and a feeling I can never fully describe, only feel.
The moment the wheels touched the runway at Bandaranaike International Airport, my heart felt full. I was home.
If anyone looked into my eyes at that moment, they could see the feeling, the feeling that I was finally where I was born, where I grew up, where I learned, where I belong, and where my heart has always been.
Final Thoughts
This flight from Kuala Lumpur to Colombo was more than just a journey across countries. It was a transition from one phase of life to another.
Some flights take you to destinations. This one brought me back to myself.
