Travel Diary | Colombo → Kuala Lumpur
2025.12.13 | The Day Before
Today was all about preparation.
I packed my luggage slowly, item by item. Clothes, little things, familiar things, and, of course, all the Sri Lankan things that somehow always find their way into my suitcase.
My mom’s food had a special place in my luggage. Carefully packed and sealed with love, just the way only a mother can do it. Somehow, those are always the hardest things to finish later. Not because they spoil, but because they taste like home.
While packing, I kept reminding myself that this wasn't a goodbye forever. It was just another return journey.
Still, the room felt quieter than usual.
There was something emotional about putting everything back into my suitcase and knowing that, by tomorrow, I would be leaving Sri Lanka again.
I went to bed knowing that tomorrow would be a long day both physically and emotionally.
2025.12.14 | Leaving Home
Morning came much faster than I expected.
My flight was around noon, so I left early for Bandaranaike International Airport. There is something about this airport that always makes my heart feel a little heavy.
It has witnessed so many of my goodbyes.
No matter how many times I leave, walking into the departure terminal never feels completely casual. My eyes weren't crying, but I'm not sure my heart could say the same.
And, of course, my first little worry of the day was my luggage.
I was convinced it would be overweight. After all, I had packed so many Sri Lankan things and, most importantly, so much food.
Thankfully, it wasn't.
What a relief.
One less thing to worry about.
After immigration, I wandered around the duty-free area for a while. I wasn't really shopping. I was just walking around, watching people, looking at the familiar airport surroundings, and slowly letting the reality of leaving sink in.
And, of course, my favourite coffee joined me for the moment.
Eventually, boarding time arrived.

✈️ In the Air

Years ago, I desperately wanted to travel alone.
Solo flights used to feel exciting, powerful, and freeing. I loved the feeling of sitting on a plane by myself and knowing that another little adventure was waiting at the other end.
But after so many journeys, solo flights feel different now.
Quiet.
Not exactly lonely. Just familiar.
Maybe even a little boring sometimes.
I took my seat, buckled my seatbelt, and waited for the flight to begin.
Once we were in the air, everything became calm and predictable in the best possible way.
I ordered chicken and prawn wanton noodles for my meal and an Americano to go with it.

The flight was only about 3.5 hours, but that was more than enough time to think about everything I was leaving behind and everything waiting for me in Kuala Lumpur.
I spent most of the journey quietly.
Looking out at the clouds.

Watching the sky change.
Letting my thoughts come and go without holding onto any of them for too long.
Sometimes, a flight gives you that kind of space.
A few quiet hours where you don't really have anywhere else to be.
🌧️ Evening | Kuala Lumpur
As we got closer to Kuala Lumpur, the weather changed completely.
The sky was dark and restless, with heavy rain and strong winds. There was even a cyclone passing through, making the weather look far more dramatic than I had expected.
For a moment, I wondered what the landing would be like.
But the landing was smooth.
The pilot handled everything beautifully, and despite the weather outside, I felt completely safe.
Inside Kuala Lumpur International Airport, though, everything seemed to move slowly.
Because of the heavy rain, baggage collection took almost one full hour.
I stood there watching the carousel go around and around, waiting for my luggage to finally appear.
Time felt strangely stretched.
And then I saw him.
My husband was waiting to pick me up.
That one familiar face changed everything.
After a long day of travelling, seeing him there felt grounding and comforting. Suddenly, all the tiredness, the long journey, the waiting, and even the emotional weight of leaving home seemed to make sense.
I was finally back.

🎄 Back in Kuala Lumpur
The airport was beautifully decorated for Christmas.
Soft lights, ornaments, festive displays, and little Christmas corners were everywhere.
It felt strange and beautiful at the same time.
I had just come from home, carrying pieces of Sri Lanka in my suitcase, and now I was standing in Kuala Lumpur surrounded by Christmas lights and festive decorations.
Rain outside.....
Christmas lights inside.....
And me, standing somewhere in between.
It felt like I had quietly crossed from one chapter into another.
Another journey completed.....
Another goodbye survived.....
Another return home.....
And tonight, more than anything, my heart is full. ❤️
