Our Cozy Mountain Getaway to Genting Highlands

We decided to travel by public transport for this trip. The most convenient public transport option from Kuala Lumpur to Genting Highlands is the bus. We normally use the Red Bus website or mobile app to book our tickets. Buses to Awana Bus Terminal depart from both KL Sentral and TBS, so we pre-booked a bus from KL Sentral to Awana Bus Terminal. 

Our journey began at KL Sentral, where we caught the Red Bus to Awana Bus Terminal. Booking through the Red Bus mobile application was incredibly convenient and budget-friendly. At just RM20 per person for a round trip (total RM40), plus an additional RM8 for cancellation refund protection and travel insurance for both of us, our total transportation cost came to RM48 – absolutely reasonable for a day trip!

The one-hour bus ride was comfortable and scenic, gradually taking us from the urban landscape into the lush, mountainous terrain. 

Upon arriving at Awana Bus Terminal, we made our way to the cable car station for the next leg of our adventure. We splurged on the glass floor cable car experience for RM32 per person (RM64 total) (one way), and honestly, it was worth every ringgit! For those on a tighter budget, regular gondolas are available for just RM11 per ride.

When we are going, the ticket counter was closed. We had to buy tickets from machines. The machines were user friendly. We got tickets easily.

Remember this is cashless. You pay by QR or card. We paid using Touch n Go Visa card.

The temple complex is absolutely awe-inspiring, showcasing traditional Chinese Buddhist architecture at its finest. The moment you enter, you're greeted by towering red pillars that stretch majestically toward the sky, their vibrant crimson color symbolizing good fortune and prosperity in Chinese culture. These ornate pillars, adorned with intricate golden dragons and traditional motifs, create a striking contrast against the misty mountain backdrop.

The main prayer hall is the heart of the temple complex, featuring elaborate altar displays with golden Buddhist deities, flickering candles, and the constant whisper of devoted prayers. The atmosphere inside is deeply peaceful and spiritual, with the gentle scent of incense creating an almost meditative environment. We spent considerable time here, observing the devoted worshippers and admiring the detailed craftsmanship of the religious artifacts.

One of the most impressive features is the towering Buddha statue that overlooks the entire complex. This magnificent statue, carved with incredible attention to detail, serves as the focal point of the temple and offers a sense of serenity and protection to all visitors. The statue's serene expression and graceful posture embody the peaceful teachings of Buddhism.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of our temple visit was walking along the Road to Enlightenment a symbolic pathway that winds through the temple complex. This spiritual journey is marked by various stations featuring Buddhist teachings, smaller shrines, and meditation spots. Each section tells a story of Buddhist philosophy, making it both educational and spiritually enriching for visitors regardless of their religious background.

The nine-story pagoda stands as another architectural marvel within the complex. This traditional Chinese tower, with its distinctive curved roofs and intricate detailing, represents the Buddhist concept of ascending toward enlightenment. While we didn't climb all the way to the top, even viewing it from the base was impressive, and the pagoda serves as a beautiful backdrop for photographs.

One of the highlights was discovering a photo opportunity where visitors can dress in authentic Malaysian costumes for memorable pictures. While we didn't try it this time, it's definitely going on our bucket list for our next visit, what a unique way to blend Malaysian and Chinese cultures!

We also encountered a local vendor selling traditional hand and neck bands based on Chinese birth year and month beliefs. At RM20 each, we couldn't resist getting matching ones as unique souvenirs from our trip. The vendor explained the significance of each design according to Chinese astrology, making our purchase feel more meaningful. I also picked up a beautiful fridge magnet featuring the temple's iconic red pillars to commemorate our visit.

The temple offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, and watching the cable cars glide past against the backdrop of the foggy mountains felt like witnessing a living piece of art. The combination of spiritual architecture and natural beauty creates an almost otherworldly atmosphere that's perfect for reflection and photography.

The indoor theme park, Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park, is literally a dream world for adults and children alike. Located within the First World Plaza, it offers climate-controlled fun regardless of the weather outside which was perfect given the foggy conditions during our visit!

The moment we stepped inside, we were overwhelmed by the sheer variety of entertainment options. The park is beautifully designed with colorful themed zones that transport you into different worlds:

- Gaming and Rides:

1. Thrill Rides: Hair-raising adventures that had my heart pounding (some were honestly too intense for me, but my husband loved the adrenaline rush!)

2. Family-Friendly Attractions: Gentle rides perfect for couples who want fun without the fear

3. Virtual Reality Experiences: Cutting-edge VR games that made us feel like we were in another dimension

4. Classic Arcade Games: Nostalgic gaming options that brought out our competitive sides

5. Photo Booths: We couldn't resist the RM5 photo booth that gave us instant printed memories of our day

- Cultural Exhibitions: One of the most educational parts was exploring the exhibitions showcasing Malaysia's rich heritage. We wandered through displays featuring traditional Malaysian houses from different states, each meticulously recreated with authentic details. The batik exhibitions were particularly stunning, showcasing the intricate art of Malaysian textile design with vibrant colors and traditional patterns.

- Interactive Experiences: The park offers numerous hands-on activities where visitors can try traditional Malaysian crafts, games, and cultural practices. While we didn't have time to try everything, we made mental notes for our next visit!

One of the highlights we were most excited about was the rooftop viewing point at the indoor theme park. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans! The entire rooftop was engulfed in thick, mystical fog during our visit, creating an almost surreal experience.

While we couldn't see the panoramic mountain views we had hoped for, there was something magical about standing above the clouds. The fog was so dense that we could barely see a few meters ahead, but it created an otherworldly atmosphere that felt like we were floating in a cloud. The mist swirled around us, and occasionally, we'd catch glimpses of the theme park lights twinkling through the fog below.

Pro tip: Check weather conditions before planning your rooftop visit, but don't be disappointed if it's foggy it's still a unique experience! The viewing point is equipped with comfortable seating areas and photo opportunities, making it perfect for family to spend some quality time together regardless of the weather.

There, you can enjoy a wide variety of dining experiences. For lunch, we decided to try Mr. Dakgalbi, one of the many restaurants in the indoor complex. Because Korean is my favorite and we needed something spicy. We ordered Korean spicy chicken, ramyeon, and cheese fried rice and wow, the food exceeded our expectations! The flavors were authentic and satisfying, perfect fuel for our day of exploration.

Later, we grabbed coffee at Starbucks and treated ourselves to ice cream at Alo, enjoying these treats while taking in the misty mountain atmosphere from the outdoor seating areas.

Eating ice cream in that freezing weather was absolute madness, but the experience was entirely worth it. Even now, we still find ourselves sneezing just from remembering how we stood there in the middle of a heavy fog, laughing as we could barely even see each other through the mist.

Besides the indoor theme park's rooftop, we also visited the viewing area outside of the resort complex. This elevated platform is designed specifically for taking in the large digital display and is usually one of Genting's most Instagram-worthy spots.

However, just like our theme park rooftop experience, we were greeted by an incredibly thick blanket of fog that completely obscured the views. While we couldn't see the promised breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding, there was something uniquely romantic about being wrapped in the misty mountain clouds together.

The viewing area itself is well-designed with comfortable seating and photo opportunities, making it a perfect spot to spend some quiet time together - even when Mother Nature decides to add her own mystical touch to the experience!

By the time we were ready to head back, the weather had cleared significantly. The queue for regular cable cars was quite long, but fortunately, there was no wait for the glass floor gondolas,another reason to splurge on the premium option!

The descent was absolutely magical. With the mist cleared and a gentle rain beginning as the sun set, we were treated to some of the most beautiful mountain scenery I've ever witnessed. The combination of the golden hour lighting, the fresh mountain air, and the romantic atmosphere made for an unforgettable end to our day.

Weather Preparedness:

- Bring a light jacket or cardigan – it gets quite cool at high altitude

- Pack a cap or scarf for changing weather conditions

- Check weather forecasts before your trip

Budget-Friendly Strategies:

- Book all tickets online in advance for better rates

- Consider combo packages for theme park attractions

- Bring snacks and water, though there are plenty of dining options available

Time Management:

- Allocate at least two days if you want to experience both indoor and outdoor attractions thoroughly

- Start early to make the most of your day

- Be flexible with your itinerary based on weather conditions

- Comfortable walking shoes

- Light rain jacket or umbrella

- Power bank for your phone (you'll want to take lots of photos!)

- Cash and cards (some vendors prefer cash)

Our day trip to Genting Highlands was everything we hoped for and more. From the mystical cable car journey through the clouds to the exciting theme park adventures, delicious Korean cuisine, and that breathtaking sunset descent  every moment was special.

What made it even better was sharing these experiences with my husband. There's something magical about escaping the city together and creating new memories in such a beautiful setting. The mix of adventure, culture, cuisine, and natural beauty makes Genting Highlands the perfect destination for couples looking for a quick but memorable getaway.

We're already planning our return trip to tackle the outdoor theme park and perhaps stay overnight to experience the resort's evening entertainment options. Genting Highlands has definitely earned its place as one of Malaysia's must-visit destinations, and I can't wait to go back!
